Many of the other days I had a bit of a grumble at the early starts, but as Sossusvlei it was worth it. We woke before dawn, making a bit of a mad dash from the campsite to the highest dune in that part of the desert. All to take in one of the most beautiful sunrises you will ever see...
I did think I was in decent physical condition, but perhaps after 2 months of travel without regular exercise (and a few more beers than normal!!) I might have gotten a bit out of shape. It certainly was hard work climbing those sand dunes. And I still have red sand all over my suitcase... it seems to have accumulated in pockets, shoes, etc. despite my best efforts to clear it all out... oh well.. at least I'll be going to Ayers Rock soon enough (to accumulate even more red sand)
It didn't occur to me to take a photo of the night sky, but the desert is a great place to sit outside and stare at the stars. Even though I have been in places where there was so little artificial light that you could really see thousands of stars, I had always assumed that there were a few clouds in the sky. Until Namibia, where there really aren't any clouds at all!!! And therefore I was informed that "the clouds" were in fact the Milky Way galaxy. Wow! What a sight...
Leaving Sossusvlei, we went to visit the second largest canyon in the world (behind the Grand Canyon in the US) We had some pretty impressive views of the canyon, and hung around to watch the sunset over the canyon...
After the canyon, we crossed over into South Africa, where almost immediately the temperature dropped about 10-15 degrees and it started to rain... what a change after not seeing a cloud for 2 weeks (except for the Milky Way of course)...
