Whistler

It's been several months since I've posted to my blog, since basically my "world tour" has ended and I'm trying to get a job and return to the "real world". But since the job hunt is going slow, I decided to spend some time skiing this winter, and I found the perfect thing... a 6 week ski instructor training course at Whistler. Who knows if I'll ever become a ski instructor... but the chance to spend 6 weeks skiing with an instructor working on improving my skiing... fantastic!!

After getting a lift up to Whistler with my brother and sister-in-law, I found that my accomodation is a $3+ million chalet, not far from the slopes!! And a bunch of nice housemates, doing a combination of ski instructor training and ski improvement weeks... none of which under 30, even though almost everybody on the course is 17-19 years old!!!

Anyhow, the skiing has been great. Improving daily... but then on Thursday, it REALLY started to snow! 50 centimetres in 2 days!!! Powder powder powder!!! All the better to keep practising my improved technique. Some of the best skiing ever... And when they got the video camera out to make a group video - no crashes!!! I actually managed to look quite good.

Saturday was a day off the slopes. It was a tough decision to not spend more time in the powder, but we had an unexpected included activity - snowmobiling! Something I hadn't yet had the opportunity to do - like quad biking, but even faster!! Particularly when we got to a frozen lake and had the opportunity to go around in big circles around the lake, as fast as we felt comfortable!! Scary but fun!!

Anyhow, tomorrow it's back on the slopes for week 2. Hopefully some more "improvers" will be joining, replacing some of those "oldies" who left today... And that my skills will keep improving, although I think we start on the instructing portion, which might involve doing a lot of snowplows!!! But if it keeps snowing, I'm sure there will be lots of free time for off piste powder and moguls!! Woo hoo!!!!
